Jinju Lantern Festival

The annual Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival (진주 남강유등축제) takes place next month from the 1st to the 13th of October respectfully. Many thousands of people are expected to descend on the city for the yearly spectacular held on the Nam River that flows through the heart of Jinju.

View of Jinjuseong across the Namgang

If you’ve never been to Jinju before then below are a few pointers for getting in and staying in the city. The festival itself in centred on the river right in the middle of the city and this makes for easy access to pretty much everything.

If you’re coming by bus then you need to know that there are two terminals in Jinju. The first one is the Intercity Terminal or Shiway and this is ideally located for the festival. If you arrive at this terminal then it’s just a case of following the crowds to the festival site five minutes walk away.

The other bus terminal is Express Terminal which is located a little away from the action. Even so it’s still possible to walk the 20 minutes or so to the river by simply following the traffic/crowds but if you do land up at this terminal then taxi is probably your best option.

Jinju does have a train station and it is on the KTX but it’s a fair distance from the city centre so taxi or even local bus would be needed in this instance.

If you’re looking to stay the night in Jinju then behind the Intercity Terminal overlooking the river bank is a whole street of motels. It Should be fairly easy to find a room and for a little cheaper than bigger city prices. The best of the motels in terms of the view is the Versace Motel (베르싸체 모텔) which sits on the bridge and offers amazing views of all the action. Eden Motel is another place that is  convenient and very foreigner friendly . You can call to book a room at Eden on 055-742-6114 but they don’t speak English, so a Korean speaker is needed for a reservation there.  Other hotel options include the more expensive and exclusive Dongbang Hotel (동방관광호텔) which also sits on the river.

UPDATE > you might well want to book ahead for a room during the festival to be certain as it gets very busy in the city.

On the cheaper side of things if you want to stay in a jimjilbang then Theme Spa Land (테마건강란드) is recommended (see map below). It’s a little way out of the city centre in an area called Sinan-dong but at 10K a night it’s OK for those on a budget.

Places for food and drink are plentiful in the city centre and again you’ll find cheaper prices than say Seoul or Busan. There’s a lively bar and club district called GNU area, Gyeongsang National University (경상대학교) but again this is a taxi or bus ride away from the city centre.

Here is the famous map created by Jinju residents that is very useful and should help you with logistics.

Further info can also be found here  and right  here is bus times for the city .

This wonderful resource tool has been doing the rounds for a while now and it really needs no introduction.  Quite simply it’s the places new and old around our little corner of SK that we expats like to visit or find useful.

Jinju: Connecting to Korea’s Airports

By Heike Hermanns

Incheon International Airport to Jinju

There are many different ways to get to Jinju from Incheon, it depends on your preferences, arrival time and where you live in Jinju.

The direct buses to Jinju Gaeyang 5 way intersection (and Masan and Changwon) leave at 10.30am and 1.20pm.

Gangnam Express Bus Terminal to Jinju

The easiest way to Jinju is to take the airport bus to Gangnam Express Bus Terminal in Seoul. It’s about one hour, depending on traffic. There is the more expensive limousine bus and the cheaper red buses (6020 leaving from exit 11B). You can buy tickets (15,000 won I think) at a counter or on the bus (some traffic cards may work as well). At the airport, people generally help with ticket buying and loading the luggage (giving you a little receipt if you leave it under the bus so keep it to show when you pick up your luggage at your destination). When you get off the bus in Seoul cross the road then enter the terminal and go to the far end for the ticket counter for Jinju (in the Gyeongbu 경부 Terminal). From there, buses to Jinju go every 20 minutes until at least 10 pm. The buses all come via the Gaeyang 5 Way intersection (near GNU) and go on to the Express Bus Terminal.

You can also take the airport train and subway (line No 9 also runs express trains) to the express bus terminal. Changing at Gimpo Airport is just a dash to the opposite platform but the subway stop at the Express Bus Terminal is a rabbit warren and can be very confusing.

Flight Info

To fly out of our city, you will need to go to Sacheon Airport.

One way to get here is to go the Inner-City Bus Terminal and ask for a ticket “Sa-cheon Gong-hang”.

You will be taking a bus from Jinju-> Samcheongpo. The slow bus will take approximately 1 hour.

Samcheonpo No 05:30 to 22:30 (15 to 20 minutes interval)
* Sacheon, Samcheonpo late bus: 23:00, 23:30, 24:00
KRW 5,400
Samcheonpo (slow) No 05:30 to 22:30 (15 to 20 minutes interval)
* Sacheon, Samcheonpo late bus: 23:00, 23:30, 24:00
KRW 3,600

When you get on the bus, you can tell the bus driver “Sa-cheon Gong-hang ga jo-sey-yo” and hopefully he will stop at the airport for you, but in case he doesn’t you will be on the bus for a while longer and will have to take a taxi to the airport from Samcheongpo Inner City Bus Terminal and the estimated cab fare is pretty high. (estimated at KRW12,000) (approximately according to naver.com) The bus starts at the Shioe terminal and makes a stop across the street from the Express terminal. It then stops by GNU where there is a bus stop for all of the intercity buses which go to the southern half of the country. It then goes to Sacheon and Samcheonpo which is the end of the line.

My recommendation is to taxi to Sacheon Airport. Note that the estimated taxi fare from the Express Bus Terminal is KRW 10,000, but you will arrive at the airport in 20 minutes (approximately according to naver.com)

You can say : 사천

Flights to Gimpo/Seoul

There are flights to Gimpo twice a day (as of 2/1/2012 according to Koreanair.com) All flights are Korean Air to Gimpo and occur all days of the week. Also, tickets are not inside of the airport. Go outside of the airport and you can buy tickets from a kiosk.

Driving in Korea

Locally getting your Korean Driver’s License

Take your ARC (Alien Registration Card), passport, current driver’s license from your home country, 3 passport sized photos, and KRW 11,000 in cash to the DMV. You will have to sign papers and pass a physical exam. Next, you will have to trade in your home country’s driver’s license for a Korean one. You may get your original license back whenever you want, but you will have to give back your Korean license. The closest DMV to Jinju is in Masan.

…to Masan from Jinju:

Take an Inner-city Bus towards Masan. You may either take city bus 72 or tell a taxi the following information:

경남 창원시 (Gyeongnam Changwon Shi)

마산합포구 진동면  (Masan Hapo-Gu Shindongmyeon)

진동리 700 (Jin Dong Ri Chil Bek)

Ph: 055-271-7603

It’s always a smart idea to have the phone number with you just in case the taxi driver doesn’t understand you or recognize the address!

Korean Driver’s License for an American (Option 2)

Getting a driver’s license in Korea isn’t as hard as one may think! Within your first 90 days in Korea you may exchange your U.S. Driver’s license for a Korean license after submitting a notarized affidavit attesting the authenticity of your license and its state of origin. One can obtain this affidavit by making an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. Be sure to bring a valid driver’s license, passport and ARC. There will be a fee of $50 for the notary.

You can find more info here:

International Driver’s License for an American

If you are interested in obtaining an International Driver’s License, the process is much easier BUT does take longer. This is the process that I used that was very simple and we didn’t even have to leave our home! Through AAA you simply print out an application, include two passport sized photos (with signature on the back), a photocopy of both sides of your current driver’s license and $15USD permit fee. In addition, you will need to provide them with return postage. (This can be estimated by using UPS.com for rates) AAA says to allow 4-6 weeks for return mail unless you have included and specified express mail service.
